Eight Ways to Energize Every Morning

9537924468_f66596a798_oWorkdays are more productive when you hit the ground running.  Here’s how to make certain you’ve got the energy to start your day right, and keep it moving forward.

  • Inspire your body. When you’re sleeping, your muscles become sore and that’s why waking up makes you feel groggy. Rather than scrambling through your morning, stand right up, shake yourself out, stretch a little and take a few deep breaths. The root word of “inspire” is Latin for “to breathe.”
  • Inspire your mind. Have a list of your life goals or daily goals ready on your bed-table. After you’ve inspired your body, read your goals aloud and with real feeling. Visualize yourself achieving these goals and how you’ll feel when you accomplish each task.
  • Ignore emails and messages. If you’re like most people, you’ll be tempted to check your phone to see what’s happened while you were sleeping. Bad move! Unless you’ve got something that’s “life or death,” postpone the electronic stuff until after you’re at the office.
  • Drink good coffee. If you’re going to drink coffee, and we all know you will, then why waste your time on the bland liquid served at kiosks or the stale stuff in the community office machine? Buy fresh-roasted beans, grind it yourself and treat yourself to the good stuff. You won’t regret it and will feel better for doing so. Coffee is only good for a few minutes after brewing anyways. Otherwise you’re just doing more harm than good.
  • Fuel your body. Breakfast dictates your physical condition for the day. Fruit, vegetables and lean protein will sustain you for hours. On the other hand, sugar has the opposite effect and creates a false high then naturally that is followed by a corresponding low often known as a “crash.” Also, greasy food is difficult to digest. So just do yourself a favor and avoid them.
  • Fuel your mind. During your commute, listen to motivational audio or inspirational music rather than the news or (worst of all) talk radio. Make a point to emerge from your car after your commute with even more enthusiasm that when you entered it. Better yet, if possible, use upbeat music to fuel you through the day!
  • Be cheerful, but not annoying. As you enter the office, you’ll notice most folks dragging their feet. If you try to spread your enthusiasm, you might irritate them. Be upbeat and friendly, but don’t try to change their attitude. That’s not your job. However, smiles are contagious.
  • Do something important first. When you sit down at your desk, don’t jump into the same mundane task everyday. Instead, decide what’s the most exciting thing you can do today based upon your daily or life goals. Then do it! This creates variety and momentum that will keep you energized all day.

What do you do everyday to get yourself going? What works and what doesn’t work? They don’t call it the weekly grind for nothing and you might as well make the best of it. Carpe diem!
