Believe it or not, the holidays are near, football season just started, baseball season is coming to a close, and hockey and basketball season are just around the corner. Let’s be honest, these events typically revolve around food and alcohol. Is that a bad thing or should you feel guilty about indulging? No, everyone should enjoy a cheat meal, adult beverage, etc. here and there.

However, the key is choosing the right foods and right drinks during the holidays. Then indulge all you want. Most holiday treats and beverages are filled with unnecessary calories. So here is a list of drinks to consider the next time you want to let loose and have some fun:

Bloody Mary. The tomato juice and horseradish base provide extra nutrients, but the extras (olives, asparagus, etc.) will slow the body’s ability to metabolize and absorb the vodka in the drink. This prevents a rapid rise in blood alcohol level and should prevent poor eating decisions later on.

Wine. Red wine contains health-boosting compounds that can be anti-aging and support cardiovascular health. Go for organically produced wines as well. These wines are produced without added sulfur dioxides/sulfates, making it better for those with sulfate sensitivity.

Lastly, wine contains minimal fructose, which, if you’re looking for low/no-sugar options, is your best choice. Red wine is lower in fructose than white and is definitely the best option. Drink one glass of wine (with food) three to four nights per week.

Organic Tequila. Tequila actually has amazing flavors and isn’t as harsh as vodka. Especially when you choose to sip it versus downing it as a shot. The cleaner organic options will result in minimal hangover when consumed responsibly. Pour into a glass and sip on it.

Vodka Soda with Cucumber or Fruit. Try vodka with soda water and fresh lime. Vodka is gluten-free, sugar-free, derived from potatoes, low in carbohydrates and low in calories. Soda water keeps you hydrated and provides the satisfaction of carbonation without the sugar hangover. Stir in a slice of cucumber and a lemon twist to add some vitamins and a delicious all-natural flavor.

Gin with Fruit. Made from the antioxidant-rich juniper berry, gin is often flavored by natural herbs such as nutmeg, rosemary, or coriander. Gin makes a great base for other healthy cocktails, because it’s sugar-free and has a natural flavor profile. For example, combine it with cucumber and rosemary or raspberry and thyme.

Fermented Apple Cider. Red wine and fermented apple cider are higher in antioxidants, which honestly makes them the best options. Red wine contains the antioxidant resveratrol, and fermented apple cider is a type of beer that’s gluten-free and contains the phytonutrient, quercetin,(which is also in Beachbody’s “Energize” aka my favorite pre-workout/energy booster), and is an anti-inflammatory.
